Perfect rhymes and slant rhymes
A perfect rhyme matches from the stressed vowel to the end of the word: light and night, away and today. They are satisfying, and they are also the first thing a listener predicts.
A slant rhyme shares the vowel but not what follows it: love and enough, time and line. The relationship is audible without being obvious, which is why most modern lyric writing runs on them. If a line feels forced, an over-committed perfect rhyme is often the reason.
Using rhyme without writing to it
The common failure is picking the rhyme first and bending the line to reach it. The line then serves the rhyme rather than the song, and listeners can hear it.
A better order: write the line you mean, then look for a rhyme that lets you keep it. If nothing fits, change the earlier word rather than the meaning of the later line.
